If kettles crust overnight and RO membranes scale within months, hardness is usually part of the story. Calcium and magnesium drop out as scale when water is heated or concentrated. Delhi NCR borewells are often hard. Societies in Faridabad, hotels in Gurugram and small factories on the Noida Expressway see the same white crust on taps, geysers and heat exchangers.
Where a softener actually pays
Boilers, laundry, dishwashers, guest bathrooms and RO pre-treatment are the jobs where ion-exchange softeners earn their keep. Scale on a boiler tube wastes fuel. Scale on an RO membrane cuts recovery and shortens element life. A hotel laundry that fights stiffness in linen is often fighting hardness, not detergent brand.
Jaljiwan water softeners use cation resin and brine regeneration. We size resin volume from hardness (ppm as CaCO₃) and peak flow, not from a round vessel that “looks about right”. Duplex plants keep soft water coming while one vessel regenerates. Hotels and continuous process lines in NCR usually need duplex. A small office RO pre-treatment can live with simplex if a short regen window is acceptable.
Softening is not desalination
A softener swaps hardness ions for sodium. TDS barely falls. If drinking water is high in salts, you still need RO or a blend. Many Delhi homes and offices run a softener or filter in front of RO so the membrane is not the first thing to see hardness. That pairing is cheaper over three years than replacing 4040 or 8040 elements twice a year.
What we need to quote a softener
Send hardness, peak flow (LPH or m³/h), city and whether the duty is boiler, laundry, society or RO pre-treatment. From Dwarka we will say simplex or duplex, salt use in kg per day, and whether a WTP or filter is needed first if iron or turbidity is high. Iron on resin is a different problem. Do not buy a softener to fix rusty water without checking iron.
